The distinct business advantage that Apple has achieved thanks to its hardware is the sheer volume of iPhone sales, which justifies the big spending on the specialized chips that make that hardware so powerful. The new image processor is a perfect example. It can spread the cost of that investment in chips over hundreds of millions of iPhones. In comparison, the falling sales of stand-alone cameras have hampered the ability of camera companies to innovate and spend on core technologies. Given that hardware and software are equally important today, Apple’s advances in both areas makes it difficult for anyone to beat the company in photography for the masses. You can see why the camera companies are doomed.
Wenn wir über Fotografie sprechen, unterscheiden wir immer noch zwischen „richtigen“ Kameras einerseits und (leicht abwertend) Smartphone-Kameras auf der anderen Seite. Diese Unterscheidung ähnelt der ebenso unzutreffenden Trennung vom „mobilen Internet“ und einem „standortgebundenen Internet“ – wenn die Verbreitung als Bewertungskriterium eine Rolle spielt.
Ich liebe meine Sony a6000 mit all ihren Objektiven. Und trotzdem ist es mein iPhone, das die meisten Fotos knipst und Videos aufzeichnet. Nicht (nur) weil es kleiner, handlicher und immer dabei ist, sondern weil die Software, die Bearbeitungsmöglichkeiten sowie die dauerhafte Netzanbindung um das Foto augenblicklich zu teilen, so viel besser ist.
Die überlegene Bildqualität einer System- oder Spiegelreflexkamera tritt in den Hintergrund, wenn das Kamera-OS zu kompliziert ist und ein Foto erst überspielt werden muss bevor man es anschauen oder weitergeben kann.
Und wie viel besser ist die Bildqualität für die meisten Betrachter wirklich, wenn man sich die ersten ‚Shot on iPhone‘-Fotoserien mit dem neuen Modell anschaut (iPhone 7 at the US Open / iPhone 7 Plus Photos from the Titans-Vikings Game)?
