[update] Canalys-Statistik zählt Tablets zum PC-Markt

Das Marktforschungsunternehmen Canalys verzeichnet, in ihren heute veröffentlichten Zahlen zum weltweiten PC-Wachstum, erstmals das Tablet-Segment mit Apples iPad oder dem Samsung Galaxy Tab. Andere Statistik-Institute betrachten die Geräte mit berührungsempfindlicher Oberfläche in einer gesonderten Kategorie.

„Any argument that a pad is not a PC is simply out of sync. […] With screen sizes of seven inches or above, ample processing power, and a growing number of applications, pads offer a computing experience comparable to netbooks.„, schreibt Canalys-Analyst Daryl Chiam.

Die Erwähnung von Netbooks ist interessant, da heutzutage niemand mehr den Mini-Rechenmaschinen ihren Platz im PC-Markt abschreiben würde. „Pads gave the market momentum in 2010, just as netbooks did the year before„, führt Chiam in der Pressemitteilung weiter aus.

Das iPad erreichte im April 2010 die Marktreife. Der erste Quartalsbericht mit iPad-Zahlen folgte im Juli 2010. Seitdem steht offen die Analysten-Frage im Raum: „What if the iPad were a PC?„. Die bereits damals durchgerechneten Erhebungen schossen durch den Himmel. Die aktuellen Canalys-Zahlen belegen dies jetzt, indem sich Apple an Position drei der weltweit größten PC-Hersteller wiederfindet.

Andere Institute, wie beispielsweise Gartner, definieren „Media Tablets“ außerhalb des PC-Marktes. Es bleibt abzuwarten, wie lange dies noch so fortgeführt wird.

Update

Five years ago, back when Gartner and IDC were confused about what a smartphone was Canalys was on top of the market and was the first to correctly describe the smartphone. Kudos for being the first again.
