Erste Klage gegen Wetter-Apps, die Standortverläufe verkaufen
Thursday, the city of Los Angeles sued The Weather Channel for its alleged inappropriate use of location data—the lawsuit claims that the Weather Channel “takes advantage of its app’s widespread popularity by using it as an intrusive tool to mine users’ private geolocation data, which the Weather Channel then sends to IBM affiliates and other third parties for advertising and other commercial purposes entirely unrelated to either weather or the Weather Channel App’s services.”
Aus dieser Ecke hätte ich keine Klage erwartet. Wer letztendlich aber diese Anwendungen vor Gericht zerrt, ist nicht wichtig: Die versteckte Aufzeichnung von persönlichen Ortsdaten mit einer (bezahlten) Weitergabe an Dritte, sollte nicht nur mit der Justiz über Geldstrafen verhandeln, sondern sich auch Sorgen um seinen Verbleib im App Store machen müssen.
Diese Akteure stellen nicht nur ehrliche Mitbewerber in ein schlechtes Licht (siehe die Überschrift „Stop Using Third-Party Weather Apps“), sondern vergiften insgesamt den App-Store-Brunnen.

I will never sell your location information to third parties. Full stop.
All requests to weather providers are stripped of IP addresses and other identifying information, so they cannot track you because they have no clue who you are.
Your location is only stored on CARROT’s servers if you turn on notifications. The database entry is anonymized and only the most recent location is stored, so that data can’t be used to track you either. You can also delete your data from CARROT’s servers at any time.
