Samsung zahlt Lizenzgebühren an Microsoft – für Android

Microsoft announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., to cross-license the patent portfolios of both companies, providing broad coverage for each company’s products. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone.

And that’s genius. If you decide to use Windows Phone, Microsoft wins because you pay them a licensing fee. If you decide to use Android, Microsoft wins because you pay them a licensing fee. This will force more vendors to consider Windows Phone because, why not? They’re paying Microsoft either way.

‚Nachfrage bestimmt das Angebot‚, heißt es immer. Aber was passiert, wenn sich das Angebot ohne Gegenwehr ändert. Ich schätze, dass ein hoher Prozentsatz aller Mobilfunk-Kunden ihr Telefon nicht mit explizitem Betriebssystemwunsch kauft.

Windows Phone 7 ist beileibe kein schlechtes OS, derzeit jedoch kein Mitspieler im Tablet-Markt – nächstes Jahr allerdings schon. Und Google baut keine eigene Hardware – zumindest aktuell.

Unter diesen Vorzeichen bekommt die Motorola-Akquisition erneut einen ganz anderen Beigeschmack.
